Daylight Terror in Pune: Armed Gang Loots Gold Worth Lakhs in Vadgaon Budruk Jewellery Heist

Pune, Maharashtra – July 2, 2025

In a spine-chilling incident that has sparked shockwaves across Maharashtra’s business circles, four armed assailants carried out a brazen daylight robbery at a jewellery store in Vadgaon Budruk, Pune, on Monday afternoon. The gang reportedly escaped with gold ornaments worth several lakhs, raising serious questions about the state of urban policing, the vulnerability of local businesses, and organised crime syndicates operating in western India.

According to local police sources, the incident took place at around 1:45 PM at a well-known jewellery store located near the bustling Sinhagad Road area. CCTV footage, now in police custody, shows the robbers—masked and armed—storming into the store, threatening staff and customers at gunpoint, and swiftly looting the jewellery displays.

“They were inside for barely four minutes. It was shockingly well-planned,” said an eyewitness who managed to alert a nearby vendor during the heist.

How It Happened: The Timeline of the Heist

Based on statements from shop staff, eyewitnesses, and CCTV footage:

  • 1:43 PM: A silver hatchback pulls up near the store.

  • 1:44 PM: Four masked men barge in, two brandishing guns, the others carrying bags.

  • 1:45–1:48 PM: Staff and two customers are held at gunpoint while display cases are emptied.

  • 1:49 PM: The gang flees in the waiting vehicle, headed towards the Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass.

Despite heavy traffic on Sinhagad Road, the robbers successfully evaded checkpoints, highlighting glaring lapses in police preparedness.

Investigating the Law Enforcement Response

The heist occurred despite multiple police nakabandis (checkpoints) recently set up due to a surge in thefts across the city. However, not a single checkpoint intercepted the getaway vehicle, pointing to poor inter-departmental coordination.

Senior officials at Pune Police’s Crime Branch admitted that the gang may have had prior surveillance of both the store and police activity in the area.

“This is not a petty crime. The execution suggests involvement of a larger gang with precise planning,” said a top officer speaking on condition of anonymity.

The FIR has been registered at the Sinhagad Road Police Station, and a dedicated SIT (Special Investigation Team) has been formed. Authorities are working with the Maharashtra Cyber Crime Unit to trace the mobile towers used during the heist.

Trader Community Reacts: Fear and Frustration

Local jewellers and shop owners have expressed deep concern over the lack of police patrolling in the area, particularly during business hours. In fact, the Pune Saraf Association has called for an emergency meeting to discuss enhancing private security.

“We contribute crores in taxes and employ thousands, but we’re left to fend for ourselves in moments like these,” said Shailesh Jain, a jeweller from the area.

The association plans to petition the Maharashtra Home Ministry for CCTV subsidies, panic button installation support, and a stronger patrolling grid in key commercial zones.

Are Armed Robberies on the Rise?

According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, armed robberies in urban Maharashtra rose by 11.2% in the last year. Pune, known for its relative safety, has witnessed a troubling rise in jewellery and chain snatching incidents since late 2023.

A March 2025 report by the Centre for Criminology Studies India indicates an uptick in “flash heists”, a trend where robbers use rapid, coordinated attacks lasting less than five minutes, often involving stolen or unregistered vehicles and temporary SIM cards.

What About CCTV and Surveillance?

Though CCTV footage from the store and nearby premises has been obtained, experts note that most of Pune’s commercial zones lack integrated surveillance networks. Unlike Mumbai’s Hawk Eye System, Pune’s public-private surveillance grid remains in its infancy.

“There’s no real-time monitoring of CCTV in most areas,” says Ravi Kulkarni, a Pune-based cybersecurity consultant. “Without integration between store surveillance and city command centres, you're always playing catch-up.”

Policy Recommendations and Next Steps

In light of this robbery, there are renewed calls for:

  • Urban Surveillance Upgrades: Linking private CCTV systems to a central city database.

  • Rapid Response Teams: Positioning mobile patrols near high-value zones.

  • Panic Alert Systems: Subsidized silent alarms directly linked to nearest police stations.

  • Trader Security Workshops: Joint initiatives between police and business bodies on best practices.

What Now?

While the Pune Police continue their hunt for the perpetrators, the robbery serves as a wake-up call for both authorities and traders. The need for smarter, more connected urban policing has never been more urgent.

In a city known more for tech parks and culture than criminal fear, the Vadgaon Budruk heist has punctured the illusion of safety and reminded everyone that when it comes to crime, complacency is never an option.
